Buxworth Base

Outdoor activities are know to develop important personal traits such as leadership, teamwork, self-motivation, communication, confidence and consideration. These life skills prepare students for life after education and are highly valued by the students and society.

The school has a strong involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and has had many individual and group successes in the scheme in recent years. We try to encourage boys to take part in this award which is very highly regarded by employers, parents and educational establishments.

Buxworth Base is the former railway station at Buxworth in the Peak District of Derbyshire. It is owned by Burnage Academy for Boys and provides a base for outdoor activities.

It is located in the village of Buxworth, about 18 miles from central Manchester – close enough to be easily reached, but far enough away to be ‘different!’

Buxworth Base was set up by converting the former railway station in the village of Buxworth into a self-contained Residential / Activity Centre, with the objective of providing young people with opportunities to access the countryside at affordable cost.

It is available for letting as self-catering accommodation to schools, youth organisations, and other corporate bodies. It can also be used as a camping base for activities such as Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions.

Buxworth is a good base for all types of activity in both the Dark and White Peak areas of the National Park; Edale, Castleton, Hayfield, Kinder Scout and Buxton are close by. It is about 25 miles west of Sheffield, 30 miles from the M1, 33 miles from the M6 and 14 miles from the M60. The main line of the Peak Forest Canal starts in the village at Bugsworth Basin. The O.S. Grid reference of the site is: SK 024823.

The Grounds:

Buxworth Base is set in private grounds, reached by a short, steep private road. [This is usable only by minibuses. Large coaches cannot directly access the site.] At the level of the house is a large flat area of ground, enclosed by fences, gates and walls. There is a parking area and 3 separate grass areas which can be used for activities orto pitch tents for camping. The rest of the grounds are mostly woodland on steep banks. The operational railway line is separated from the grounds by a 3m spiked palisade fence. Passing trains cause little disturbance (especially inside the house which has very thick walls!)
