Money Matters : Financial Help with your Child’s Studies

 

If your son decides to stay on in education he may be able to get financial support to help with his studies by applying for a 16-19 Bursary.

The Bursary is aimed at students who need financial help so that they can stay in learning. It has been designed to cover costs such as equipment, lunch and travel costs.

There are two types of Bursary:-

 

Guaranteed Bursary

Students are guaranteed support of £1,200. To be eligible the student must meet one of the following criteria:

 

 1. A Young person in care, or care leavers

 2. A young person claiming income support

 3. A disabled young person receiving both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance

 4. Your son is advised to look for information on the 16-19 Bursary Fund on the college websites that he is interested in.

 

Discretionary Bursary

Students can apply directly to the college if they need financial help but this award is means-tested. For further information please see:

Child Benefit

This will continue until your son is 19 years of age if he remains in full time education.
